This is a beautiful essay. Unfortunately so much of the rhetoric of American Christianity and civil religion has focused on us vs them narratives.

Christianity only rarely punctured the nationalist and militaristic myths of the American nation.

I wonder if Jesus isn’t weaping over Washington DC as he once wept over Jerusalem.
