So we can debate ancient historians and sources and how to apply them to the end of the age.
I most want to know how to apply these verses to my life. How many different events was Jesus describing? Is this a description of the destruction of the Temple in 70? Does this relate to any prophecies in Daniel? Should we be preparing for these events to happen in the future?
How long will it be until the end of the world? Should I dedicate my time to educating people about the dramatic threats imposed by Climate Change, or should I not worry because Jesus will return first?
What does it look like to love my neighbor in October of 2020? How do I best feed the hungry, visit prisoners, engage with people from different faith traditions or political perspectives?
My challenge is that many peoples' answers to those question is dependent on how they understand the nature of the Bible, the approach to Hermeneutics, our own experience of faith, and the tradition that we were raised in.
Jesus spoke in Aramaic, the New Testament authors frequently read the Old Testament in Greek, the New Testament is in Greek, and we speak early twenty first century English and are communicating through the internet. Surely there is a chance that something got lost in translation or our own human frailty.
I don't know if that makes sense. I am working on my next in my beatitude series. I am up to blessed are the pure in heart. It strikes me that we may not even understand what that means, but we are told that it is the key to seeing God.
