One of the problems with this claim is that the definition of liberalism has morphed significantly over time. Your definition focuses on the nineteenth century definition. From the 1930s to the 1960s there i a major transition away from "old left" liberalism focused more on unions and wealth transfer, toward newer forms with much greater concerns about Civil Rights.
