It is interesting, I spent some time over the summer at John Brown's Farm near Lake Placid, New York. They had a huge Black Lives Matter Memorial field there.
As an AP US History teacher for over twenty years it has always occurred to me that our history contains a fundamental contradiction. We celebrate John Locke and others who justified resistance and the Glorious Revolution. Our founding fathers and mothers were guilty of treasonous rebellion against England. I ask my students when you are legally justified in armed resistance to a state. The answer I provide is after you win the war.
Since both Texas' history and the American Revolution valorize armed resistance against governmental authority it becomes pretty difficult to say that it is always wrong. At the same time the extreme deconstruction of American heroes has reached a point where huge portions of the public no longer want to pay attention except in outrage.
My hope is that we can learn to see these different stories and interpretations as part of the onward development of society. Unfortunately, we have a lot of healing to do as a nation.
Thanks for your thorough response.
