I once read Hamartia being described as flawed vision. It could include the idea of a sacred wound or fatal weakness. The idea then is to both "get the speck out of our eye." But also to recognize our failures and limitations as a gift and precisely the point where we can most help others.

Our ideas of sin as moral perfection keep getting us in trouble.
