I apologize if my point was unclear. My contention is that each party believes it is morally superior to the other. Most of us don't wake up one morning and decide that our world view is completely wrong and the other side's is completely right.
The question I am asking is how we move beyond our highly polarized present. It has to begin with an understanding of how we got here and what the other side thinks. I have been heavily influenced by teaching Lincoln speeches to high school students for over two decades.
"Both read the same Bible, and pray to the same God; and each invokes His aid against the other. It may seem strange that any men should dare to ask a just God's assistance in wringing their bread from the sweat of other men's faces; but let us judge not that we be not judged. The prayers of both could not be answered; that of neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has His own purposes."
Lincoln appears to believe his perspective to be "more correct" than southerns, but also "limited and incomplete."
Unfortunately, it is very difficult to have these types of conversations right now.
Peace
