Bill Clinton got 43% of the popular vote in 1992 that is a plurality but not a majority of 50% or higher. In 1996 he earned 49.2% of the popular vote.

I am curious whether you have read Kevin Phillips' book on the Bush family, American Dynasty. He supports many of your allegations against HW Bush. The problem with your analysis is that HW Bush did an excellent job managing the end of the Cold War. He also accepted a tax increase to deal with the budget being out of balance. His willingness to abide by UN resolutions during the Gulf War showed a respect for international law and the opinion of allies that has been sadly lacking in subsequent Republican presidents.

To your last point, I agree that the current president is making an all out assault on American traditions, values and the constitution. Reagan and the both Bush's were willing to use "dog whistle signals" to attract the votes of White racists. But they also took stands for inclusion.

Reagan in his farewell speech said we should always be a beacon of hope for immigrants. WBush actively tried to tamp down on anti-Muslim prejudice after 9/11. Many of his policies such as No Child Left Behind, etc. were designed to improve educational and economic outcomes for Black Americans.

My deepest concern is that we will not be able to solve the problems of race relations, Covid-19, and climate change without finding ways to deescalate our political civil wars and begin working together. I may be hopelessly politically naive believing that can happen, but healing, change, and growth are possible. They are however both difficult and humbling.
