Again, you are missing the major arguments here. Think about slave holders in the American south. The verse that they most wanted taught to their slaves was, "Slaves obey your masters." Or how about the ways that business owners and managers would try to enforce various forms of social control on their workers. I suspect that you would not take the writings of Marx seriously, but the reason he claimed that "religion was the opiate of the masses," was because of all the ways he saw religion being used to exploit and control people in 19th century Europe. Interestingly after Engels visited the United States he wrote to Marx saying that religion wasn't used for social control in the same way they had witnessed in Europe.
